With the celebration of Thanksgiving in November, many of us take a pause to reflect on all that we’re thankful for, and in that spirit, let me express how thankful I am to you for being such a valuable part of our business. The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 in Plymouth, MA between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people.
This feast lasted three days and was attended by 90 Native American Wampanoag people and 53 survivors of the Mayflower (Pilgrims). The holiday has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789 with a proclamation by President George Washington, but only formally observed at the discretion of the sitting president until President Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise.” On January 6, 1885, an act by Congress made Thanksgiving, and other federal holidays, a paid holiday for all federal workers throughout the United States.
Thanksgiving is a particularly special holiday with its focus on family and gratitude, free from some of the commercialism that creeps into other holidays. We hope you get to enjoy your loved ones this year without getting too bogged down in preparations. And while you’re enjoying this time, give a thought to anyone you know who needs to move for one reason or another this month. Firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller was the youngest of seven children born to Mae and George Siller. At the age of eight, Stephen lost his father, and a year and a half later his mother passed away, leaving him an orphan to be raised by his older siblings.
For a while, Stephen went through a period of struggle, but thanks to the love of his siblings and the values instilled in him by his parents, he grew up to be an extraordinary individual and dedicated firefighter. More than most, he knew that time was precious and accomplished much in his 34 years.
On September 11, 2001, Stephen, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word over his scanner of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Upon hearing the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later. He returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.
Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others.
Stephen had everything to live for; a great wife, five wonderful children, a devoted extended family, and friends. Stephen’s parents were lay Franciscans, and he grew up under the guiding philosophy of St. Francis of Assisi, whose encouraging and inspirational phrase “while we have time, let us do good” were words that Stephen lived by. Stephen’s life and heroic death remind us all to live life to the fullest and to spend our time here on earth doing good – this is his legacy.
Author and family friend Jay Price wrote: “Every momentous event, even a tragedy, has its symbolic figures. September 11th was no different; it just had a few more of them. Rudy Giuliani, Father Mychal Judge, the four guys on United Flight 93 … a hundred more … a thousand.
No bigger than Stephen Siller, whose stature only grows with time as New Yorkers and people worldwide follow his footsteps.”

Why Do I Support The Tunnel To Towers Foundation?
|

I worked in local law enforcement for over 25 years, as a member of the Bakersfield Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. I retired as a Sergeant with the Sheriff’s Office. I enjoyed a rewarding career and made some lifelong friends along the way.
Unfortunately, more than a few of my friends and co-workers lost their lives in the line of duty during my career. I witnessed first hand the dangers of serving and protecting our community and how shattering it could be for the families of those who lost their loved ones.
One of our many deputies killed in the line of duty died on July 25, 2021, when he was shot and killed working with his SWAT team at a multi-hour standoff at a residence in Wasco, CA.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid off the mortgage on the family’s home as part of its Fallen First Responder Home program. The Tunnel To Towers Foundation also runs a Gold Star Family Home Program and a Smart Home Program to assist wounded veterans and First responders.
